Thousands of Canadians Stranded in Mexico After Cartel Violence Erupts
A Mexican military operation that killed Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader "El Mencho" on Sunday triggered a wave of cartel retaliation that left thousands of Canadian tourists trapped in Puerto Vallarta. Burning vehicles blocked roads, gunfire echoed through Jalisco state, and thick smoke hung over the resort city. Air Canada, WestJet, Porter and Air Transat all cancelled flights.
Canadians described an "eerie" scene - hotels carrying on as normal while the surrounding streets sat empty, storefronts shuttered, and sirens wailed. One Manitoba man said the view behind his hotel "looks like a war zone." A B.C. mother travelling with her kids said she felt "unsettled" watching Mexican guests swim in the pool as smoke drifted overhead.
Global Affairs Canada told Canadians in the area to keep a low profile and follow local authorities. Some airlines began resuming flights on Tuesday, but the situation remains fluid. Canada already had an advisory warning against non-essential travel to parts of Jalisco.

Carney Heads to India for Trade Talks - While a Sikh Activist Gets Another Death Threat
PM Mark Carney is in India this week to talk trade diversification - part of Ottawa's push to reduce Canada's dependence on the U.S. amid Trump's tariff chaos. But back in Surrey, B.C., Vancouver police showed up at the home of Sikh Federation of Canada president Moninder Singh on Sunday with a "duty to warn" notice about a credible threat to his life. This time, the threat included his wife and children.
Singh has been getting these warnings since 2022. His fellow activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who received the same warning that year, was shot dead outside a Surrey temple in 2023 - allegedly on orders from the Indian government. The RCMP has linked ongoing threats against Canadian Sikhs to India's intelligence services working through the Bishnoi crime network.
Singh said deepening ties with Modi's government without resolving the security threats felt like "a slap in the face" to Canada's Sikh community. India has denied the allegations. Six Indian diplomats were expelled from Canada in October 2024 over the issue.
