Bessent to Carney: I Would Not Pick a Fight
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had a message for Mark Carney ahead of CUSMA renegotiations: back off. Speaking at Davos, Bessent warned Canada not to test the administration's patience. The timing isn’t an accident — CUSMA's exceptions (for now) shield Canada from the worst of Trump's tariffs, but that protection isn't guaranteed when the deal comes up for review. Carney's Davos speech last week, calling for "middle powers" to hold fast against economic bullying, clearly landed. Washington noticed. Will Canada be able to maintain its defiant posture while protecting trade access. For expats: If you're moving money, keep watching the loonie, the trade uncertainty is likely to mean there will be moves. (may they always be in your favour!).

Indigenous Leaders: Carry Your Status Cards in the U.S.
With ICE raids ramping up, Indigenous leaders on both sides of the border are telling their citizens to make sure they’re always carrying your status cards. Always. The Jay Treaty gives Indigenous people with at least 50% blood quantum the right to cross the Canada-U.S. border freely, but that means nothing if you can't prove it on the spot. The Assembly of First Nations and the Native American Rights Fund are both pushing the message hard. ICE has been stopping people who "look" undocumented. A status card or tribal ID could be the difference between a conversation and a detention.
