Historic Low in Divorce Rates; Changing Trends
Canada's divorce rate has reached its lowest point in fifty years, partly a result of changing social trends in marriage and relationships. Along with the decline in divorces, which dropped to 5.6 per 1,000 married people in 2020, the rate of marriage itself is also falling, with only 44% of those over age 15 married in 2021 compared to 54% in 1991. This reduction is being matched by a rise in common-law partnerships, particularly in Quebec, where nearly 23% of couples live common-law, the highest rate among G7 nations.
