The Rising Trend of Emigration for Affordability
A recent McGill study has shown a growing trend: a large number of Canadians, about 11% of the population, are moving abroad, with affordability cited as a primary reason. Between 2017 and 2019, onward migration of new citizens rose by 31%. The report specifically gets into the challenges in recognizing foreign credentials in Canada, pushing many to seek better opportunities elsewhere. The largest expat communities are found in the United States, Hong Kong, and the U.K., a notable disparity in emigration rates compared to these nations.

Temporary Foreign Worker Policy Revised
Canada is reducing the proportion of temporary foreign workers businesses can employ, cutting the allowable percentage from 30% to 20% in most sectors, with health care and construction remaining exempted at 30%. This decision is intended to decrease the country's reliance on temporary foreign labor, which has more than doubled in Quebec between 2021 and 2023. Critics argue this may push some existing workers towards undocumented status and worsen labor shortages, particularly in critical industries. There are calls from some quarters fora a pathway to permanent residency for these workers to ensure their rights and integration into Canadian society.
