Lake Ontario Goes Split Screen
Google Maps has started showing Lake Ontario under different names depending on where you open the app. In Canada, it will remain labeled as “Lake Ontario”, in the United States, it now appears as “Lake America.” Outside both countries, users are supposed to see both names together.
Google has sort of thrown up its hands and simply says that it (needs to follow) official government naming databases. The U.S. Geographic Names Information System changed the lake after President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week. That means a Canadian in Buffalo, Bangkok or Brussels may see a different version of reality on the same app.
Renaming things like this seems petty and unnecessary. We’ve reached out to a friend at Ryerson University Toronto Metropolitan University for comment, we’ll report again if we hear back.

CPP Money Heads Further Into India
Canadian retirement money is traveling far afield. India says its state-backed National Investment and Infrastructure Fund has raised 2 billion U.S. dollars for a second infrastructure fund, and CPP Investments are among the global names in the round.
The fund is chasing a 3.2 billion U.S. dollar target and is expected to put money into Indian infrastructure projects. Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met with Canadian pension leaders in Toronto last week, including CPP Investments and Ontario Teachers. Ottawa and Delhi have been trying to rekindle relations again after a long diplomatic freeze.
This is the less sentimental side of being Canadian since the pension system follows the money wherever it thinks long-term returns are going to be found. Sometimes that means the old country is funding roads, power and ports half a world away instead of building first at home.
