CSIS Challenged by Court Mandate on IP Privacy
The Supreme Court of Canada's decision to require judicial approval for accessing internet protocol addresses (IP addresses) has raised concerns for CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service). The recent R v. Bykovets ruling now protects IP addresses under the Charter's unreasonable search and seizure clause, reshaping norms around surveillance practices. CSIS Director David Vigneault claims the need for a national dialogue on this issue, and says (without evidence) that obtaining judicial authorization to access IP addresses will make addressing security threats too difficult.
